HCLTech helped enable cloud transformation for Belgium’s second-largest electricity producer and energy supplier, serving over 2 million residential and commercial customers. Operating in a highly regulated energy market, the client runs business-critical SAP and enterprise workloads that require high availability, security and cost-efficient operations at scale. They adopted AWS as a strategic cloud platform to support scalability, modernization and digital transformation objectives.

The Challenge

As the client expanded its AWS footprint, the organization faced challenges related to managing a complex mix of SAP and non-SAP workloads across multiple environments. The absence of standardized migration and onboarding processes led to operational complexity, while rising AWS costs and stringent regulatory requirements increased the need for centralized governance, security and optimization.

The Objective

To support its , the client aimed to establish a standardized AWS operating model aligned with MSP best practices. Key objectives included migrating and modernizing and non-SAP workloads, enabling structured onboarding through Infrastructure as Code, providing 24x7 managed services for business-critical systems, improving security and compliance posture and optimizing AWS costs through automation and continuous improvement.

The Solution

HCLTech delivered an end-to-end engagement covering planning, migration, modernization, operations and optimization.

  • Cloud planning and readiness: HCLTech conducted cloud readiness assessments, workload discovery and target AWS architecture design with standardized security, availability and compliance controls suitable for regulated energy workloads
  • Migration and modernization: HCLTech executed phased migration and onboarding of SAP and non-SAP workloads, including SAP HANA, SAP Basis, EC2 and database workloads. The engagement included SUSE OS upgrades and platform modernization using Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and Ansible, enabling repeatable and standardized workload onboarding
  • Managed cloud operations: HCLTech provided 24x7x365 managed services covering OS management, SAP Basis operations, database management, monitoring, backup, patching and incident management. Enterprise monitoring and ITSM tools were integrated with AWS-native services to ensure operational visibility and resilience
  • Optimization and continuous improvement: FinOps practices were implemented to optimize AWS costs through automated start-stop scheduling, unused resource cleanup, CI/CD pipelines and continuous security and performance optimization

The Impact

  • Reduced AWS monthly spend from approximately USD 1M to USD 400K through continuous FinOps-driven optimization
  • Achieved 99.9% availability for mission-critical SAP and enterprise workloads
  • Enabled faster and standardized migration and onboarding of SAP and non-SAP workloads using Infrastructure as Code
  • Improved security, compliance and audit readiness through automated monitoring and governance controls
  • Reduced operational overhead through automation and standardized operating procedures supported by CI/CD pipelines
